Last week I discovered a discussion board about parenting. The very interesting part of the board is that the users are separated geographically, with one board for parents in New York City an another board for parents in San Francisco. Evidently, plans have been made to bring on more cities in the near future.

In the meantime, it is amazing to read the different attitudes between parents on the two coasts. This is beyond mommy blogging and quite an introspective on mothering differences. And, of course, I have opinions on several of the topics, so I have made a few tentative posts to see if my thoughts are received well or will I be flamed for my opinions?

Maybe I missed my calling as a professional critic. Although, I must say, my younger sister is even more critical than I am. The difference between us is how we present our opinions. I try to be soft with my approach, often telling a short story that illustrates my point.I really dislike confrontations and would much rather work toward solving a problem than getting into an argument.

My sister is more straightforward than I am, and has often been called a control freak. But I say, she doesn’t shirk from issues and that she manages to get things done. So, bravo! little sister! It takes all kinds of people to make the world go round, and my sister and I are working hard to make everyone else perfect.

During one of the most bizarre job interviews I ever had, I was made to take a “character and morality test.” They never told me whether I passed or failed. I always wondered if there were trick questions on that test. Especially the one that asked if you have ever cheered for the “bad guy” in a movie. Answering yes probably got me disqualified from that job, but I was honest.

There are a lot of movies where you cheer for the “bad guy.” The one that came to mind was “Cool Hand Luke.” I always felt that he was wronged throughout his incarceration, and that the sheriff was wrong to not get him medical care when he was shot. As far as I’m concerned, the sheriff murdered Luke, which makes him no better than the people he was arresting.

Today, France took a big step forward for women.

“In our country, we cannot accept that women be prisoners behind a screen, cut off from all social life, deprived of all identity,” President Nicolas Sarkozy said in a presidential address to the French Parliament.

“The burqa is not a religious sign, it’s a sign of subservience, a sign of debasement – I want to say it solemnly,” he said. “It will not be welcome on the territory of the French Republic.”

I totally agree with him and yet it worries me that the French want to start a religious issue. Religious wars are the ones that drag on forever and no one seems to win them.

Although I did not vote for him, I was excited to watch the inauguaration on TV today of Barack Obama. Unlike everyone who is so excited about having our first black President, I am just glad that Bush is finally out of office and gone. Bush should never have been put in office for a second term. Our country would not be in this predicament if we had put a Democrat into office 4 years ago. I don’t care what color skin our President has. Anyone will be better than Bush.

Since I was 11 years old and burned at the Christmas gifting and receiving with a joke present and no effort to buy or rent the one and only thing I truly wanted for Christmas, I’ve not been a fan of Christmas. Of over 50 years of Christmases, I can honestly only recount 3 that were enjoyable. So again, I’m not a big fan.

Evidently a lot of other people feel the same way. I’ve seen three different messages that say “Merry F’ing Christmas” or a more direct variation of same. I don’t recall ever seeing that or hearing that before. So I find it odd that I see that three different places this year.

My dad used to say that Christmas is nothing but an excuse for people to go out and spend money that they don’t have on people that they don’t give shit about the rest of the year but feel pressured to buy them gifts (that one in five aren’t going to want) for one day in December.

I don’t agree with that completely. To be brutally frank, if I don’t give a shit about you, I’m not going to be buying you any gifts. Or cards.

It’s the part about spending money that you don’t have that is more likely true. A lot of people overspend on Christmas. To be fair, it’s not just the gifts. Lots of people spend on fixing up or decorating the house and yard, sending out Christmas cards, supplies for baking cookies, groceries for big meals with family and friends, and many travel great distances at great expense to “go home for Christmas.”

All I can tell you is that if you expect to spend a lot of money at Christmas, you should save up during the year and work up a reasonable budget and stick to it.

Merry Christmas.

My two sons both registered to vote about a month ago and have been waiting for election day to go vote this year. We’ve had a lot of political discussions their entire lives and we pretty much are in agreement. I’m so proud that they take this responsibility seriously. My youngest voted early this morning and my oldest waited until early evening. Neither one had to wait longer than about 15 minutes, which is surprising. So we are watching the returns on TV and will see who wins tonight!
