What a nice birthday! Thanks to everyone for the cards and Facebook messages. It was a happy day – nothing special other than a wonderful dinner at P. F. Changs with my family. That was special enough for me – I really enjoyed that.

Another birthday! Where does the time go?

We are going to have a nice dinner at a good asian restaurant tonight. Other than that, I hope it is just a lazy, pleasant day.

Price of Beef

The price of beef has been inching upwards all year. It is getting very hard to afford the good cuts of beef for regular family dinners. I have had to cut back on steaks for just special occasions.

I think it is time to start exploring different ways to cook fish. If you have any favorite recipes, please share!

Nipper

When I was a little girl, we used to take Lee Highway to go around the Northern Virginia suburbs. When we got close to Merrifield, we would always see this huge figure of Nipper, the dog. Nipper was the mascot for RCA records. I loved watching this big dog and the record player from the back seat of my Daddy’s car as we drove by, I don’t believe it is there any more. But it was fun to find this old photo of a childhood landmark.

Summer Vacation

School is almost out. Tomorrow is the last full day of school and then the kids go Thursday long enough to pick up their final report cards and clean out their lockers. I think all the library books have been rounded up and turned in. So we are good to go! Bring on the summer!

Old Bikes

My step-dad used to tell us stories of the early motorcycles. Of course he owned several of them, including an Indian that he bought the first year that they came out. Oh I wish he had kept that bike!

Hey Alexa!

My daughter’s best friend since grade school is Alexa Wallace. I love that girl like she is my own daughter! I can’t tell you how many hundreds – or thousands – of meals she has shared with our family at my dinner table, and how many vacation trips that we included her, family outings, holidays, etc. I’m so proud of her for going to college and getting a good job and that she’s “turned out well”!

More Family Math

Another very cool thing about my family is the way the numbers of our birthdays fall. There is a definite pattern of numbers and my mom played those numbers on one of her Las Vegas trips and actually won Keno money from them. The birthdays for the 5 of us run 21, 19, 17, 15 and 13. Isn’t that cool?

That numbering pattern didn’t follow through with my kids. Mine were born on the 1, 2 and 4.

One of my brothers is celebrating a birthday today. It is not one of the “big ones,” but the cool think about his birthday is that I was 10 years old when he was born. And then, when my first born son was born, my brother was 10 years old. So we have me minus ten years equals my brother, and he minus ten years equals my son. That’s the family math.

Coffee or Tea?

My grandparents came to America in the early 1900’s. They always had a cup of tea for themselves or their guests. In fact, they always offered, “Would you like a nice cup of tea?” It was always referred to as a nice cup. I can’t think in my head about having tea without thinking of it as a nice cup of tea.

But, when I was 16 I was introduced to coffee and as an adult I have fully embraced coffee. I have a cup of coffee in the morning and am not human nor fit to be around until after I have had my cup of coffee.

Tonight, I am enjoying a nice cup of tea while I watch Letterman and try to get settled in for the night. Every time I make myself a nice cup of tea I think of my grandmother and my granddad and I miss them.
