Our First Significant Snow Tomorrow

The weather forecast has been using that 4-letter word, snow, for the past couple of days. Looks like it will finally get here sometime tomorrow. I’m not surprised – after all, this is the middle of January, which is right in the middle of winter. Cold temperatures and the chance of snow are part of the weather in Tennessee every December, January and February, with a tiny chance in November and March.

The big question on everyone’s mind is always, “will schools be closed?” We handle that by the county and each the 7 in the Metro Nashville area has different challenges and concerns. But the biggest factor for all of them is whether the roads will be safe for the school buses or not. The schools here have already announced they will be closed all day tomorrow.

Some will complain and criticize saying that we have not even seen the first snowflake and that the weather forecast could be wrong. But with all the satellites and radar and computer modelling we have to help the weather forecasters, our people have gotten pretty darn good about predicting snow and ice. So we are having rain tonight and tomorrow morning, with temperatures dropping steadily through the night. And then at some point, it turns to freezing rain, then sleet, and then snow – predicted to accumulate about 1″ in my area.

Let’s just hope that the freezing rain and sleet does not last long. Ice on the trees is always worse than the same amount of snow. Be safe, my friends!

Enjoying the Fall Colors

With summer over and the cold air returning, the trees have been turning the most wonderful colors. Autumn is truly one of the best times of the year. The smell of the smoke from bonfires and barns is just amazing. Of course, the down side is that when the leave all fall, we have to clean them up. But that is alright because it gives us a chance to get outside in the brisk air and of course playing in the leaf piles is always fun too.

We like to take long drives at this time of year and just enjoy the fall colors. Sometimes we will just pack a small bag and take off for the weekend. We will find a small B & B a couple of hours from the house and spend time exploring the area, hiking, fishing and touring antique shops. Sometimes we will find little oddities to tour as well. Once, we rented a little log cabin up the Smokies and toured Gatlinburg. It was beautiful.

You never know what you are going to see. We’ve seen buffalo, long horn cattle, black bears and horse drawn carriages. We even found an elephant sanctuary on one such trip, down in Hohenwald. That was a lot of fun I can tell you now.

You should really try a drive out in the country sometime. It helps to get away from regular routines and just enjoy life.

Impracticable Jokers

My son turned me onto one of the most entertaining and enjoyable of “Reality Show” impracticable Jokers. It comes on the TruTV channel on our cable package. Not a channel that I had ever spent any time watching. It now is on top of my “Favorite” channels!

This show is about four long time best friends that enjoy embarrassing each other in any way that they can! So far my favorite episode is when Sal and Murr try to get someone in a campus library to hush them, using bird calls, jingle bells, tubas and other loud sounds that are not acceptable to produce in a library any where. The cymbals at wwbw.com turned out to be too much for Sal to handle so he walks out with his head hanging down low and is one step closer to be that nights “Loser” and that is never a good thing.

Welcome November

The weather does not really feel like autumn yet, but here it is November already. I don’t like to count down until Christmas, but it does seem like there is a sense of urgency to get into the spirit of the holidays.

I am focused on Thanksgiving now and will do a little bit of Christmas shopping here and there until after Turkey Day. We also have Veteran’s Day to celebrate this month. And I’m sure that one night, very soon, I will have to resort to turning on the furnace and getting heat in the house to stave off the chilled night air.

Try White Vinegar Instead

My sister just told me that I could be using white distilled vinegar instead of liquid fabric softener in my washing machine that works just as well as any fabric softener around. I thought she had fallen off of her rocker at first but then I decided to go ahead and give it a try and lo and behold she was right. Now how cool is that? It is much cheaper and is better for the machine!
