France Takes a Stand for Women

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Today, France took a big step forward for women.

“In our country, we cannot accept that women be prisoners behind a screen, cut off from all social life, deprived of all identity,” President Nicolas Sarkozy said in a presidential address to the French Parliament.

“The burqa is not a religious sign, it’s a sign of subservience, a sign of debasement – I want to say it solemnly,” he said. “It will not be welcome on the territory of the French Republic.”

I totally agree with him and yet it worries me that the French want to start a religious issue. Religious wars are the ones that drag on forever and no one seems to win them.

Summer – Officially

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Today is the longest day of the year – as far as sunlight goes. I love summer – its my favorite time of year. I love the long days, the beaches, the outdoor activites. I could easily be a snowbird and move every year to stay in a warm climate. Thankfully, the winters are pretty mild here, so I don’t have to move. If winter lasted more than the 3 or 4 weeks we have here, I’d be packing and heading south – that’s a guarantee.

Summer Movies

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

This is a great year for new movies for children. There are fun and exciting movies coming out just about every week, just for kids, as well as several good ones for adults. the biggest one that I want to see is the new Transformers movie that comes out next week. I hope to see that in the theater on a big screen for maximum enjoyment of all the special effects.

I have not seen a movie in 3D, but evidently there are several 3D movies out now, too. I think we might go watch one just so I can experience the 3D effects. Sounds like cool fun on a hot summer day.

Perky Perky Rachael

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

In the mornings I have the TV on CBS so I can watch/listen to the morning news while I get dressed, fix breakfast, tend to the dogs, etc.

If the morning routine is running long, the Rachael Ray show comes on. Some mornings I just turn off the TV and play some of my favorite music while I finish up, and other mornings I just leave the TV running and listen to Rachael Ray.

She has some interesting guests and segments, but most of her cooking and recipes are just pasta and burgers and I’m really not interested in 2001 ways to fix hamburger patties.

I have to admit she is a cute young thing, but a little too perky for me to tolerate in the mornings. If her show was on at 7:00 pm I would be a more appreciative audience and might even get to watch the shows. But at 9:00 am – I can’t handle the perkiness and I’m not able to just sit down and watch the whole show. I have a life!
