My own memories of Halloween are great fun, year after year as I was growing up in the suburbs of Washington, DC. We lived in an upscale, established neighborhood and the parents didn’t worry about letting the kids head out to go door to door for the night. We had to eat dinner first – it was always at 6:00 pm sharp. Then we bolted out the door to catch up with our friends and we stayed out until about 10:00. Never had any trouble with other kids or perverts. It was always a lot of fun back in the 50’s and 60’s.
Things have sure changed. There is no way I would allow my kids to go out on their own. If they go out, I’m with them. I worry about perverts but worry more about gangs of teens and even shootings in some parts of town. I’ll walk the streets with my kids and carry the flashlight, and I’ll stay at the end of the driveway to let them go to the door on their own. But we all go out together and we stay together, and if we don’t know who lives in the house we walk on by. That’s Halloween in the new millenium.

There was a great story on 60 Minutes tonight about T. Boone Pickens and his plan for reducing out dependence on foreign oil.He is promoting the conversion to natural gas and wind turbines for a lot of our energy needs.
Here is a link to some great video clips about Pickens and his different plans and ideas. Please take a minute to watch them and join up with his supporteres if you agree with what he is proposing.

My goodness. Yesterday was gorgeous weather, in the upper 70’s and a slight breeze. But this morning it was like waking up to the Twilight Zone. The temperature never got above 55 and they are calling for as low as 33 degrees tonight. Well, there goes the rest of the tomatoes still on the vine.
This is the time of year that made Fried Green Tomatoes famous. When you know it’s going to frost and you go pick everything left on the vines, ripe or not. If they are still green, slice’em up, dredge them in seasoned bread crumbs, and fry them in a shallow cast iron skillet. Delicious!

So the Predators lost their first game but now they’ve won the next two games. The team is finally coming together with new lines and a handful of rookie players that need to get their rhythm. Two out of three aint bad. Sounds like a song, eh?
Friends called this morning to ask why we weren’t at the last game. They were so sweet to notice. We promised to see them soon.

The new hockey season opens tonight, with my favorite team, the Predators, playing against the Blues in St. Louis. We are going to watch the game on TV.
There are a lot of new, young faces on our team this year. I will miss some of the veterans who got traded away. It broke my heart when I learned that Darcy Hordichuck was sent to North Carolina. He was my favorite player for several years. And we dumped our starting goalie, Chris Mason, in favor of the new youngster, Dan Ellis. They gave Chris Mason to St. Louis, so since we are playing against them tonight – it will be interesting to see how that works out.
